3 Innovative Things You Can Do With Your Revit Models

With the HoloBuilder Add-In for Autodesk Revit, you can easily place 360° views in Revit and upload rendering exports & sheets to a HoloBuilder project.

A set of Autodesk® Revit® models is often the foundation for a digital-based, Building Information Modeling (BIM) compatible, carried-out construction project. With the combination of 3D modeling and a BIM process, projects can become significantly more efficient, so that the tools are seeing a great adoption within the industry. When combined with 360° Reality Capture, even more, innovative possibilities open up. We present you three exemplary use cases to give you an idea.

Compare your Revit model to the real world counterpart side-by-side

The “ultimate goal” for your Revit models is that the team in the field builds a representation of them in the real world. Once they are doing their duty, it is required for the project management team to keep track of the scope of your project and see if it has changed in comparison to the initial design.

Compare a Revit model rendering with Reality Capturing 360° imagery data side-by-side in HoloBuilder.

This is where 360° Reality Capturing comes into play. With HoloBuilder’s Reality Capturing solution the team in the field can easily document progress and capture the entire project all round with 360° images. Thus, a digital twin of the project is created in the cloud, with as little overhead as possible. And it is easily accessible to everyone, including the project management team, from the first day on. With the HoloBuilder Add-in for Autodesk® Revit®, you can even go one step further and add “day 0” by uploading 360° renderings of the model to your HoloBuilder project, which is then also accessible to all stakeholders via the Web Viewer. When viewing the project, that now includes both 360° photos from the real world project and the 360° renderings from your Revit model, you can easily compare them side-by-side in one browser window with the SplitScreen feature. Enable the SplitScreen mode and simply select the Revit model rendering in the TimeTravel panel on the left side of the screen. On the right side choose the as-built 360° image of the point in time that you would like to compare against the model. Now you can interactively compare all angles of project stages with each other in a completely new and innovative way to keep track of projects. This would not only allow for continuous updating of the model with the real site conditions but will also be really useful for the future when the facility management starts.

Wall Measurements in your Revit models for everyone

Think of it: You have finished all the detailed Revit models of your current project. Now you are contacted by suppliers who want to know if prefabricated parts can be delivered with a specific combination of vehicles and cranes through the existing wall openings. Wouldn’t it be great if you could just share the Revit model with them and let them do the required measurements within it, to check if their estimations work out? We may have a solution for you: Why not import a 360° rendering of your Revit model into HoloBuilder with the Add-In for Revit and measure directly in the rendered scene? We recommend setting the height of the camera position to exactly 160 cm (5’2.99 inches) when exporting your model from Revit for best accuracy in the measurements.

You can start measuring within your Revit rendering via the HoloBuilder Web Editor.

Once imported into HoloBuilder, you can invite anyone to edit your HoloBuilder project and they can start measuring with the HoloBuilder wall measurement feature right away. Applicable to vertical areas, distances will show up within your rendering in the Web Editor and Viewer.

Furthermore, viewing the HoloBuilder project on mobile devices, for example for quick access in a team meeting or any other situation with your stakeholders, is very easy via the mobile browser. Thus, all measurements done via the Web Editor can be also accessed on mobile devices and shared with others for editing who can then also add measurements as needed. Quick measurements, for rough estimations within your Revit model renderings, have never been easier.

Mobile Access for everyone

For mobile access to your Revit model, you would usually need an extra application, where you can upload your Revit project and then open it with your preferred mobile device. But there is also a nice alternative: If you export a 360° rendering of your Revit model to HoloBuilder, the resulting project is a more lightweight solution, even for complex models, compared to the actual Revit model. Independent from the model’s complexity, you can easily place HoloBuilder 360° views within Revit and upload those views (plus sheets!) to a HoloBuilder project, where you can link them to a virtual tour.

Easily open the HoloBuilder project on your mobile device and for example view via Cardboard mode.

Afterward, the model view can also be shared with your clients, architects, and all your stakeholders by simply sending them a link. The HoloBuilder project can be navigated intuitively and without any training. It becomes even more interactive this way: When your renderings are uploaded and saved in a HoloBuilder project, simply open it in viewer mode in the web browser on your mobile device, switch to Cardboard mode and place the mobile device into any Cardboard viewer. When you look through it, it feels like being right within your Revit model! You can look around by moving your head, activate action objects by looking at them and walk the tour through your Revit model without even needing your hands. By means of an immersive 360° experience, you can easily gather instant feedback on the designs and usability of the space. If you own an HTC Vive or Gear VR device, you could even open the HoloBuilder project in the web browser on those and view your Revit models there.
